New Polymer £5 Now in Circulation

The new polymer £5 is now in circulation. Polymer banknotes are cleaner, safer and stronger than paper banknotes.  By January 2017, more than half of the paper £5 notes will have been replaced with polymer notes.  Legal tender status of the paper £5 will be withdrawn in May 2017.

A new polymer £10 note featuring Jane Austen will be issued in summer 2017.

Many businesses have been working hard to prepare for The New Fiver – from adapting cash handling machines, to training staff to recognise and authenticate the new note, and raising awareness with their customers.

The features to look for on the new £5 note include:

  • Check the see-through window and the portrait of the Queen
  • Check the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) is gold on the front of the note and silver on the back
  • Check the foil patch below the see-through window changes from ‘Five’ to ‘Pounds’ when the note is tilted
  • Check the coronation crown appears 3D
  • Check the ultra-violet feature
  • Check the circular green foil patch on the back of the note which contains the word BLENHEIM

For further details on ensuring your business and staff are ready for the new notes, fact sheets, the charity auction of Bank of England banknotes with low serial numbers will be held on Monday 03 October and more please visit the Bank of England site.
