With more and more people working from home during the current crisis we have put together some tips for remaining productive whilst working remotely.

  • Organise your workspace before you begin – Ensure you have the right equipment and remove distractions.
  • Secure connection – It is critical to set up secure remote working, you do not want a computer virus ruining your day as well.
  • Utilise the tech – There are a number of apps that facilitate collaboration, knowing what are going to use and how you are going to use it before you begin remote working is helpful.
  • Start as you mean to go on – It’s tempting to get up late and stay in your PJ’s…but don’t!  Get up and get ready at the same time as you would if you were commuting.  Tricking the mind into being active ensures you will sit down ready to be productive from the outset.
  • Take Breaks – Remember to walk away from your screen, make a cuppa, and take your lunch break.  You will be glad you did!
  • Maintain regular hours – Obviously, this is not always possible but whenever you can try to maintain your normal working hours.
  • Set ground rules – If you are sharing your space with other people, or family members are at home, it can be helpful to set some ground rules.
  • Set goals – In order to remain productive set yourself goals each day.
  • Remember to communicate – Remember to stay engaged and communicate.  Call colleagues or use videoconferencing.

You also need to also be aware of your mental health, it’s a stressful time and possibly a lonely time too so make sure you keep in touch with colleagues and family and friends by phone, text, Skype etc – let the technology work for you.
