Fitzrovia Mural Restoration

4 MARCH: Update on works and statement from Dr Lee Bofkin

The Fitzrovia Partnership has received the latest update from Lee Bofkin, Co-founder of Global Street Art, who are the contractors restoring the beloved Fitzrovia Mural. Naturally, there is a lot of trepidation around the project as it holds a very dear place in hearts of Fitzrovians, however it will be restored sympathetically and back to its full beauty as explained by Dr Bofkin:

“Global Street Art is wholly committed to the restoration of Mick Jones and Simon Barber’s Fitzrovia Mural. We are incredibly proud to have been awarded this project and appreciate the sensitivity around this much loved mural.

We have undertaken a great amount of research for this project, including a comprehensive digital mapping of the mural, an extensive study of how it looked previously before lower parts were lost to graffiti and how the colours would have looked when the mural was first painted, by looking at the vibrancy of other murals from the period. This thorough research will facilitate us to restore the mural authentically.

We are strongly committed to a faithful restoration of the mural having initially offered funding for a restoration project with Kristina in 2015. While those initial discussions did not lead to the mural restoration at that time, we are thrilled to now be involved directly with Camden Council in accurately restoring the mural back to its full beauty.

Global Street Art is an organisation that exists “to live in painted cities” and we are well known for our work on murals. Since we were founded in 2012 we have organised 2500 legal murals across London. That number greatly exceeds our commercial projects and we are proud of our extensive history of working with local communities within Camden, having also organised over 100 murals in Camden’s housing estates:

The style of our murals differs greatly depending on the site and scope of works and is in no means limited to “graffiti style” some examples of murals we have designed are attached.

We have also appeared most recently in press because of our plans for London Mural Festival this coming September:
