The government has announced that to gain entry to nightclubs or other venues with a large crowd from the end of September, people must be fully vaccinated. This has come as a disappointment to nightclub owners who were just celebrating reopening on 19 July. It is unclear how nightlife venues will be able to monitor this on the doors. Proof of full vaccine will be required in the form of a certificate or card, or on the NHS covid app. Currently 35% of 18-30 year olds have not had their first jab.
The government expects that by the end of September everyone will have been offered their 2nd vaccine. This follows the concerns on the rate of transmission in recent weeks, with cases back up to levels last seen in March 2021. These large indoor spaces could be super spreader events. Currently nightlife venues are only encouraged to ask for proof of vaccination or a negative test but this is not law.
