Advocacy

The Fitzrovia Partnership works on behalf of businesses, advocating for policies that help businesses in central London operate effectively and efficiently, promoting long-term economic growth.

We lead and participate in campaigns that drive commercial competitiveness such as funding for public realm schemes and business rates reform.

We work in partnership with local government and key stakeholders across London such as London BIDs.

Recent Business Campaign

Whilst the business support measures provided by Chancellor of the Exchequer helped to keep businesses afloat, the recovery in central London is projected to be slower than in other areas of England, particularly for the hospitality industry.

Ahead of the March 2020 budget, we called on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to focus on two key areas:

1. Extend the business rate holiday
2. Extend 5% VAT for hospitality industry

Outcome:

Hospitality businesses including restaurants and pubs will be exempt from business rates until the end of June 2020. After that they will be discounted to one third of the normal charge for the rest of the financial year, up to a maximum of £2m for closed businesses.

The VAT discount to 5% for food and drink sold in pubs and restaurants will last until the end of September. After that it will increase to 12.5% for a further six months

Public Realm

The Fitzrovia Partnership is constantly looking at ways to improve public realm in the area. Many of these measures result in supporting Sustainable Working with the outputs being clean air and healthy streets.

a. The Strategy
The objective of Fitzrovia Village is to develop cleaner air and heathier streets in Fitzrovia. Working with ARUP, to inform our placemaking strategy, The Fitzrovia Partnership has feasibility and concept designs for Fitzrovia Village, in line with The Mayor of London’s Healthy Streets agenda.

b. The vision is to:

  • increase walking & cycling through re-imagined public realm
  • create a safer, inclusive environment for pedestrian, cycle and vehicle users through improved streetscape design
  • reduce and mitigate vehicle emissions and reduce surface transport creating a healthier environment through the promotion of sustainable transport alternatives
  • support economic growth and regeneration through increased footfall, dwell time and the introduction of Smart City technology


c. The ambitions for three key streets:
The development of Charlotte Street as a distinctive destination for food, beverage and hospitality through a sensitive design proposal that responds to user and local resident needs with consideration to the historic and cultural context.

Strengthen the character and identity of Warren Street by encouraging greater visitor numbers through enhanced connectivity and a re-imagined public realm.

Improvements to the public realm on Fitzroy Street to consider the scale of the buildings and the relationship between the frontages and the streetscape to create a more welcoming experience/.

The Fitzrovia Village report presents a range of short, medium and long term opportunities and interventions that support meeting these objectives.

d. Activity:

Throughout 2020, working with Camden Council, the following concepts have been tested and monitored:

Streateries: pavement widening interventions made on Charlotte Street and Warren Street (in addition to Cleveland and Goodge Street) to enable greater flexibility for hospitality businesses to trade outside and to support enabling safe social distancing.

Cycling: A dedicated cycle lane has also been installed on Charlotte Street.

Monitoring: AI technology counts pedestrian, active travel and vehicle movements (with the ability to identify vehicle types) to see how the space is being used.

As the project evolves, we will be supporting London Borough of Camden with full and appropriate consultation with all Fitzrovia stakeholders before any permanent interventions are introduced.
