Oxford Street pedestrianisation update
Key changes
From Monday 26 October, Oxford Street will be pedestrianised between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street, with bus and traffic diversions starting the evening before. Exceptions will include mobility scooters and emergency vehicles which will retain their access at any time. Loading vehicles will still be able to access the area between midnight and 7am.
North-south connections will remain open on the following roads, bar during periods of short-term closure to allow construction works:
- Orchard Street / North Audley Street
- Duke Street
- Stratford Place / Davies Street
- Vere Street / New Bond Street
- Holies Street / Harewood Place
- Regent Street
- Great Portland Street
Traffic diversions
Buses and other traffic will be diverted away from Oxford Street between Portman Street and Winsley Street from the evening of Sunday 26 October to ensure preparatory works can be completed. The traffic-free area will be reduced to between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street on the morning of Monday 26 October.
What to expect
Some construction will take place in the area, but efforts will be made to minimise the impact.
This is part of a phased delivery programme.
The easiest way to visit Oxford Street is via public transport, from Bond Street, Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road, and Marble Arch.
Some buses will be diverted onto different roads, and will serve new stops in Wigmore Street, Henrietta Place, and Cavendish Place.
Cycling and taxis or private hire will not be permitted on the traffic-free area of Oxford Street.
There will be no access for deliveries onto Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street outside of midnight and 7am. During this time there will be defined access routes.
TfL have provided a guide to support businesses with their operations.
