Oxford Street is now traffic free

We're working with the Oxford Street Development Corporation to make sure the benefits reach Fitzrovia
Oxford Street

As of Monday 26 October, Oxford Street is traffic-free between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. It's a significant change for the West End, and one we welcome.

Our team was on Oxford Street this morning to see the changes come into effect and to talk to people about what it means for the area.

How we got here

Plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street have been discussed sinced the 1960s, with several attempts stalling progress along the way. This time, the Mayor of London set up a dedicated body to deliver it - the Oxford Street Development Corporation was established on 1 January 2026 and took on planning powers for the area from Camden and Westminster councils in August.

Public support has been clear; the 2025 consultation received more than 6,000 responses, and two thirds of those who gave a view backed pedestrianisation. Final approval followed in February this year.

What happens next

Today (26 October), marks the first phase - £150m investment. Over time, OSDC plans to add trees and greenery, more seating, and rest areas, better lighting and signage, and space for cultural, sporting, and festive events.

What it means for Fitrovia

The pedestrianised section ends at Fitzrovia's western edge, and the streets running north from Oxford Street, including Great Portland Street, Great Titchfield Street, Wells Street, and Berners Street, are important routes into our area.

We're working closely with OSDC as it develops the next phase of the project. Our focus is on these gateway streets; clear routes; good signage; and clean, safe streets that encourage people to continue into Fitzrovia.

We'll also be keeping an eye on how the changes affect the streets around us, including traffic, deliveries, and servicing, and raising any issues with OSDC and the councils.

Most importantly, we'll make sure the views of our businesses, residents, and workers are part of the conversation. If you have any thoughts on how the changes are affecting you, we'd like to hear them, so don't hesitate to get in touch.

We'll share updates as plans progress.
