TfL – unspent money on oyster cards and how to reclaim

The move from Oyster cards to contactless bank card or phone payments on TfL transport has left millions of pounds still left on oyster cards. Although options for topping up oyster cards have been decreased, oyster card usage will remain open as it is still a useful way for many to manage their pay as you go accounts and gives people more choice.

If you have switched over to contactless payments, here’s how to get a refund from your pre-paid oyster card:

  • Sign into your Oyster card account and follow the instructions for refunds
  • Use this online form and fill in details
  • By phone: call TfL customer services on 0343 222 1234 with your Oyster card number.
  • At stations: if you have £10 or less pay-as-you-go credit, you can get a refund from tube station ticket machines. Touch your Oyster on the yellow card reader, select ‘Oyster refund’ and follow the instructions. The ticket machine will give a refund in cash.
