Sustainability is an increasingly important factor for a multi-campus organisation in Fitzrovia but we can’t do it on our own. To deliver sustainable solutions, we need to work collectively as an area. The Fitzrovia Partnership is making this happen.

PROGRAMME 3: ENVIRONMENTAL & PLACE

The Fitzrovia Partnership’s Sustainability Charter

As a Business Improvement District in central London, we bring businesses together in a defined geographical area which can help advance sustainability – playing a role in co-ordinating and delivering solutions working with a large number of stakeholders. Through our programmes and commercial relationships, we play a role in educating and influencing behaviour, acting as a conduit to drive sustainable development in our district.

 

Any activities and programmes we undertake, we are committed to minimising the environmental impacts of conducting business whilst improving the economic and social sustainability for businesses and residents alike.

 

Our approach is guided by our Let’s Do Fitzero programme which aligns with governing bodies such as Mayor of London and local authorities to meet London-wide targets. We prioritise where we can have the greatest impact, and will continue to evolve and seek new opportunities for the district which contribute to our long-term target of Carbon Net Zero

Terms of Reference – Sustainability Steering Group

Purpose and Focus

  • The role of the Sustainability Steering Group is to oversee The Fitzrovia Partnership’s sustainability program as outlined in the 2022 to 2027 Business Plan.
  • The Steering Group will review progress on achieving the outcomes set out in the Business Plan for each of the Programme Areas and provide advice and guidance to the Board on how to progress these areas.
  • The Programmes under the purview of the Steering Group are mainly those in Programme 3: Environment and Place from the Business Plan, but all programmes have some relevance to this Steering Group and their work will be reviewed accordingly (Programme 1: Voice and Representation; Programme 2: ESG – Environment Social and Governance; Programme 4: Reducing Costs; Programme 5: Insights; Programme 6: Promotion and Communications). Details of the Programmes to be included are listed in the Annex at the end of this Terms of Reference.

Operations

  • The Steering Group will meet quarterly, 6 weeks before the Board
  • The Steering Group will have a Chair whose role will be:
    • Convene and chair the meeting
    • Approve the agenda
    • Review the papers to be circulated to the Steering Group, including a progress dashboard on the Sustainability projects in the Business Plan
  • The Chair of the Steering Group will be supported by a Co-Chair, who will help manage the working of the Steering Group and step in for the chair in the event of absence
  • The Chair and Co-Chair will be selected by the Chief Executive of the BID and approved by the Board.
  • The membership of the Steering Group will include business members of the BID insuring a broad cross-section of types of businesses (residential, commercial) and sizes of business (small medium and large).
  • Invitations to join the Steering Group will be extended to members with an interest in and commitment to driving forward the Sustainability commitments of The Fitzrovia Partnership. Established track record is not required, but commitment is essential.

ANNEX

Details of the Programmes to be monitored and reviewed by the Steering Group are:

Programme 1: Voice and Representation:

  • Working collaboratively with key agencies and businesses to:
    • Improve Air Quality, Reduce Carbon Emissions, Reduce surface transport and congestions

Programme 2: ESG – Environmental, Social and Governance:

  • Deliver a programme to help advance sustainability by working with businesses and employees to minimize their environmental impact and contribute to their ESG objectives.
  • The programme will focus on the following issues: improving air quality, Reducing carbon emissions, Increasing recycling, Reducing Surface Transport, Reducing business costs, Maintaining a vibrant community and enhancing outdoor spaces, Security and safety, Business Resilience.
  • Support members in embracing environmental and social matters and identifying and adopting new sustainable opportunities.
  • Seek common environmental targets across the Fitzrovia business community Explore opportunities towards a circular economy in the area.
  • Provide an advisory service on compiling sustainability policies for member businesses
  • Work in partnerships with LB Camden to support inclusive business, recruitment and employment practice.

Programme 3: Environment and Place:

  • Let’s Do Fitzero will help businesses, employees, and visitors make meaningful changes and adaptations towards sustainability as a positive business proposition
    • The programme will initially focus on incentives and advice on sustainable travel, reducing commercial and polluting vehicles in the area, reducing single use plastics and reducing food waste. The programme will expand each year to cover additional strands of sustainability
  • Transforming Fitzrovia’s Public Realm: West End project, HS2, Crossrail, Fitzrovia’s Liveable Neighbourhood

Programme 4: Reducing Costs

  • Many of these Sustainability Programmes will reduce costs and the cost impacts of these programmes will be reviewed by the Steering Group

Programme 5: Insights

  • Any relevant sustainability insights will be included – trends to monitor, etc.

Programme 6: Promotion and Communications

  • Promotion of the Sustainability projects and the take up of the programmes as a result will be reviewed.
