LONDON FESTIVAL OF ARCHITECTURE

'The Junction' by Studio OleO

“Everyone passed through the Fitzroy sooner or later.” Augustus John

The Junction, designed by Yaobin Wang and Zixin Ye, explain the influences behind their Fitz&Sits creation.

The Junction embodies contrast and harmony through a bench design inspired by Augustus John’s metaphor —“everyone passed through the Fitzroy sooner or later.” We reimagine this as: “everyone meets on the bench sooner or later.”

The Junction is not just a bench—it’s a space for gathering, expression, and connection, blending the past and future while embracing a sustainable vision.

The design unites squares and circles, symbolising opposition and integration. Squares, crafted from recycled glass, reclaimed plastic and concrete, collide and merge into a circle —a platform for expression, performances, and connection.

Bohemian Spirit + 'Voice'

Inspired by Fitzrovia’s bohemian spirit, we explored how it intersects with the concept of voice. Fitzrovia’s history is shaped by diverse individuals who have gathered, overlapped, and inspired one another across time—sometimes in harmony, sometimes in conflict.

Material Recycle Loop

The three recycled materials—glass, plastic, and concrete—each represent a different recycling stream: commercial waste, daily waste, and industrial waste.

The materials reflect Fitzrovia’s character:
a. Recycled glass references its vibrant creativity and glass waste.
b. Reclaimed concrete honours its industrial history.

About Us

Our love for design and Fitzrovia compelled us to enter this competition the moment we saw it. Both of us graduated from the Architecture Association, located on Bedford Square and throughout our years of study, Fitzrovia became so much more than just a neighbourhood—it became our second home. Its countless pubs provided solace after endless all-nighters, while morning runs in Fitzroy Square gave us the energy to start each day. Fitzrovia became the place where our lives, beyond academics, truly unfolded. Now, even as professionals, we find ourselves drawn back on sunny weekend mornings or afternoons, sitting on street benches outside its coffee shops, catching up with friends. The iconic BT Tower remains a familiar beacon guiding us home.

Yaobin Wang holds a Master’s degree from the AA School of Architecture, specializing in computational and modular design. .

Zixin Ye joined Zaha Hadid Architects, after graduating from the Architectural Association’s Diploma School, where she worked for three years.

About Sainsbury Wellcome Centre

The Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (SWC) brings together world-leading neuroscientists to generate theories about how neural circuits in the brain give rise to the fundamental processes underpinning behaviour, including perception, memory, expectation, decisions, cognition, volition and action. Funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and Wellcome, SWC is located within UCL in Fitzrovia and is closely associated with the Faculties of Life Sciences and Brain Sciences.

Why are we sponsoring a Fitz&Sits seat?

We are proud to be part of the Fitzrovia community and delighted to be sponsoring a Fitz&Sits seat to provide a welcoming space for people to sit, reflect, and connect. We are also excited to use the space to host “The Travelling Drawing Club” — an art workshop for the public.

View the Travelling Drawing Club event on Saturday 14 June.

What does it mean to us?

Being part of Fitz&Sits reflects our commitment to the Fitzrovia community – not just as neighbours, but as collaborators in shaping a vibrant, inclusive, public space. It’s an opportunity to provide a space where people can explore ideas together, spark curiosity, and create meaningful connections beyond the walls of our research centre.
