The Government is consulting on a new power for Mayoral Strategic Authorities, including the Greater London Authority, to introduce a visitor levy on overnight stays. This would apply to places people pay to stay overnight for a short period. That includes hotels, hostels, bed and breakfasts, serviced apartments, and short term holiday lets listed on platforms like Airbnb.
The Government’s preferred model is a percentage based levy linked to the cost of accommodation.
The consultation is asking for views on:
- How the levy should be designed and capped, including notice periods for businesses
- Which accommodation types should be in scope, including short term lets
- How it would be administered, and who is responsible for collecting and paying it
- How revenue should be used to support local services and the visitor economy
Members are encouraged to read the consultation and share feedback through the official survey. Consultation closes Wednesday 18 February 2026. If you would like to provide input into The Fitzrovia Partnership’s response, please contact Marcos Gold, Director of Policy and Place
